Plett Dreaming.........
Its been 3 days since we traveled back home on that endless flight from Johannesburg -(16 hours non-stop to JFK), and some of the fog of jet lag is just beginning to clear, but as I scroll through my photo’s of the three dreamy weeks we spent in our house in South Africa this Christmas, it’s understandable that I feel a little gloomy to be back in chilly Boston.
Here’s why:
I miss the astonishingly pink sunsets over the ocean:

I miss all the lazy lunches under the trees with the family, watching the world go by.
(Le Fournil in the Lookout Centre)
Yum!!!!
We tried the new Katarina’s restaurant at Kurland Hotel and Polo Centre out in the countryside, it’s owned and run by old family friends - Magical setting!
Grazing ponies make a charming backdrop -
We liked it so much we had our last evenings’ dinner there, a little chilly, but we were next to a roaring fire!
I love the wonderful, sophisticated, African vibe that they have achieved - the traditional African ceiling of ‘rietdak’ - (roof made of reeds) seals the deal!
I miss waking up every morning to the sight of the azure bay lying there to greet me in all its fabulousness!!
I miss the hundreds of family beach walks we took together..
And stopping and chatting to the neighbours on the wooden walkway we share down to the beach.
Mother and daughter walks, mother and son walks, and walks down by the lagoon at low tide....
I miss adding to my crazy shell collections that people are warned to touch only if they have lost their fear of death!
And the ripples the ocean leaves on the sand when the tide goes out-
The silvery plants that grow on the edge of the vegetation bordering the beach - (Gabs took this photo with my camera - love it)
I miss the endless lazy breakfasts on our deck, with the various guests that come and go....
and the treat of having all my children in the house!!!
I miss party time!! Every year we like to give a big party so we can catch up with all our old friends that are scattered all over the world...All that prep doesn’t seem like a schlepp while you’re on holiday!
These are always very relaxed affairs -
This year the kids had a ‘Life Aquatic’ 30th birthday party to go to - Mad preparation!!
What a glam bunch they are - well, at this stage of the evening anyway!!
I miss our wonderful next door neighbours - This New Year’s Eve we pooled our food and had a lovely big dinner party at their fabulous house - Paul took charge of the barbecue ....
That’s Lucille and her son Johnny with us - blog on my amazing friend and neighbour Lucille is in the works!!
Can’t say I actually miss my birthday!!, but my children would not take heed of all my instructions to ignore it - they bought me wild oysters from Knysna and shucked them in the kitchen...
Perfect shallot and miso dips on the side - just glorious combined with the creamy taste of the ocean!!
Emmie’s friend was recruited to make me a pink birthday cake, Jessica cooked the most delish fresh pesto pasta with chicken and baby tomatoes -
Do I look like my cup runneth over??????
I miss spending long afternoons trawling through all our favourite local craft and home decorating stores - This jacket made by a local seamstress of ‘Schweschwe ‘ fabric fit my mum like a glove, we had to have it!
I love bringing home fun and unusual African treasures for my clients and friends..These pics are from Sprout Design - one of my fave design shops.
I miss having to admire my mum’s courtyard garden for the thousandth time!!
Catching up with Serena - (at 7 am before a beach walk) she is one of my oldest friends - showed her my Africa Collection, she has fab taste so her opinion is one I value!!
I miss having babies in the house again....
And I miss the unexpected reminders that I am in Africa - this charming fellow found a nice spot for himself in my tee shirt shelf!! Eeeeek!!
(Actually this is a just a rain spider - not at all dangerous.)
I took this picture on the morning of our departure - I think I deserve to feel just a little gloomy!!
